El Salvador Trainee relief engineer with Irish aid organisation, GOAL. Involved in post-earthquake relief and reconstruction activities. First-hand experience of extensive destruction, especially to traditional adobe houses [over 110,000 adobe houses destroyed by two major earthquakes on January 13, 2001 (Mw 7.7) and February 13, 2001 (Mw 6.6)].

Mexico, Guatemala, El Salvador Research investigation to evaluate adobe housing reconstruction after the 2001 El Salvador earthquakes. Funded by the Earthquake Engineering Research Institute (EERI) Learning From Earthquakes program, and published as Volume V in the Lessons Learned Over Time Series. Report describes the 2001 earthquakes, adobe housing in El Salvador, attitudes to adobe construction, funding for reconstruction, adobe seminars and training programs, adobe publications, improved-adobe construction projects, and challenges and opportunities for improved adobe. Published in both English and Spanish.

El Salvador Reconnection with people, projects and progress in El Salvador. Despite significant reconstruction since 2001 the situation seems as desperate as ever. With most designated earthquake reconstruction funds now exhausted, many people continue to live in precarious housing conditions.
